Measuring Bucket Pins on a Mini Digger

It's a super common question "I need a replacement bucket for my mini excavator but how do I know which bucket I need?". Put simply, you need to know three measurements - the pin diameter, the pin centre and the dipper gap. Now you may be thinking well "How do I measure bucket pin dimensions on my mini digger?" Here we explain how!

Top Tip: Before starting, it's always best to remove the pins from your attachment. You don't have to but you will find it much easier and more accurate to measure any dimensions if you do this.

How to Measure the Pin Diameter:

  • You will need a tape measure or steel ruler for this.

Simply hold your tape measure over the hole of the bucket. Allow for a slight mm wear if the bucket has been used often. You can also use a set of callipers for an easier method. Another way is to remove the pins and measure the width of the pins themselves but sometimes it isn't always as accurate (and especially if it has any wear and tear!)

How to Measure the Pin Centre:

  • You will need a tape measure or steel ruler for this.

You measure the pin centres by the distance between the two bucket pins from centre to centre. Place your tape measure over the top of the pin holes. If you aren't sure where the centre of the pins are, measure the distance from the first edge of the first hole to the first edge of the second hole.

How to Measure the Dipper Gap:

  • You will need a tape measure or steel ruler for this.

The dipper gap is the internal diameter between the bucket hangers. Get your tape measure and pop it through the hole. Place the tape measure up against the opposite hanger and this will give you the correct dimensions for the dipper width. Remember to measure the smallest internal size (which is between the bosses of the bucket).
