Common Reasons Why Your Lawn Mower Won't Start

It's not surprising lawn mowers have problems (and especially after the long winter months when it's not in use!)

It's always good to do routine maintenance to try and avoid any problems and here we will explain what reasons might be behind your lawn mower not starting.

The best place to start is always with fuel - Check you have petrol. Double check that you have some and also replace any petrol that may be old.

Spark Plug is Faulty

Having a faulty spark plug is the most common reason. Try cleaning any debris and if this doesn't work, replace the spark plug.

Air Filter is Dirty

Check if the air filter is clogged. Clean the filter if it is blocked and if all the dirt can't be removed then replace with a new one.

Fuel Isn't Reaching the Engine

Fuel can be prevented from reaching the engine when the fuel filter or carb is clogged. If you're reading this after the Winter months, it could be that old/bad fuel in the float bowl can be why it doesn't start. Drain the old fuel from the float bowl and clean the carb. Again if this doesn't work, then replace.

Defective Start Switch

This could be stopping your lawn mower from turning on. Test the switch with an ohmmeter. Replace the switch if it is working intermittently or is difficult to turn.

Electric Lawn Mowers

It's always good just to double check the power supply is connected!

Blown Fuse or Tripped Breakers

This could be a reason so test the outlet - if it won't switch on, the breakers and fuses may need to be replaced or reset.

Cutting Bag is Full

If the cutting bag is full, this can cause problems. Try disconnect and emptying the bag.

Grass and Debris Clogging up the Blades

If they're clogged, this can prevent the blade from turning. Clean the blades to fix this problem.

On/Off Switch is Faulty

If the on/off switch is faulty, this could be the problem. Fix this by replacing the switch.

Activated Thermal Cut-Out

If your lawn mower blade is jammed or the motor is overloaded, the thermal cut-out may be activated.
