Maintenance Tips for a Small Engine

A small engine can run smoothly for years with regular maintenance. Here we will give you some tips to keep your engine healthy.

Fresh Air

Small engines need clean air. If your air filter is clean, it allows maximum airflow and the optimum fuel/air mixture. Clean it if you can but if it's too clogged then it needs to be replaced.

New Gas

A small engine will always love fresh fuel. If it's been sitting around for a long time, don't use it anymore and recycle it. Remember never to add a fuel stabilizer to old gas it wont bring it back to life. Add it only to fresh gas to extend its use.

Avoid Ethanol Blends

Ethanol-free gas are preferred by small engines. Ignition problems can be caused as ethanol attracts moisture from the air and this separates from the gas which sinks to the bottom.

Check for Spark

Check to see if there is electricity getting to the spark plug with a spark plug checker. If there is no spark, it lets you determine the failure cause.

Old Carburettor

Always replace your carburettor if it's at the point of no cleaning or fixing will help!

Spark Plug

It's recommended to check/adjust the spark plug every 6 months (or 100 hours) and to replace it every year (or 200 hours).

Oil Change

Every season you need to change the oil. It helps maintain good compression and prevents sludge from building when the oil is clean and fresh. It's recommended to check the level of the oil each time you use it.
